Le Rossignol, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Two very different TV/cinema pieces which I came across last weekend, I recommend them!

Le Rossignol (Näktargalen) is an operatic work by Stravinsky upon the story by the danish writer H.C. Andersen. I remember seeing it live at S. Carlos Opera House in Lisbon somewhere in the 90's...
I was surprised yesterday by a TV version - digital animation mingled with real actors - with the Opéra National de Paris and good singers (Christian Chaudet and Natalie Dessay - magnificent). The fun thing about this TV version is in fact the digital cartoons recreating both traditional and modern chinese characters (the old lamps vs. electronic equipment "Made In China"). A lot of metaphoric stuff, brilliantly composed by the animators.

"The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" is a laugh from the beginning to the end...A cast that includes Bill Murray, Anjelica Houston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum and the guy from "Starsky and Hutch"... dark humor, "Tintin" cartoons, kitsch electronic-music recreating the 60's-music-for-TV... a bit of Monthy Phyton too...Jacques Cousteau is probably turning on his grave... The movie is deeper than it looks, it's also about middle-life crisis, personal failure, egoism. Lots of social critic underneath the humor...
